How we work it out

Where the number comes from.

Courier pricing is not complicated, and we would rather show you the arithmetic than keep it to ourselves. Here is everything that goes into the figure above.

  • Driving miles

    We check both addresses against the U.S. Census Bureau's address records, then measure the distance by road. A straight line across the map would come out short of what the driver actually has to cover.

  • Current fuel prices

    The fuel charge follows the weekly Ohio gas price average published by the Energy Information Administration. It is the same public figure the freight industry uses, and it is updated every Monday.

  • What you pay us

    We add the whole thing up the way a traditional courier would bill you for it, and then we take our discount off that total. You will see both figures, so you can tell what the difference comes to on your own delivery.

Where the rates come from

We did not take these numbers out of a competitor's contract. They come from courier pricing guides published in 2026, which put local courier work at $1.50 to $3.00 a mile, a local run under 20 miles at $20 to $50, and fuel surcharges at 8% to 15% of the mileage charge. We took the middle of each of those ranges. That gives a $24 base charge covering the first 5 miles, $2.25 for every mile after that, a weight charge in tiers, and a fuel percentage that follows the Ohio gas price.

Why your actual price could be higher.

There is a good deal about your delivery that this page has no way of knowing. Any of the following can push the real price above the estimate:

  • The driver having to wait at either end, or a dock that is not ready when he gets there.
  • Stairs, elevators, a long carry, or a job that really needs a second person.
  • Anything oversized, fragile or hazardous, or that has to be handled a particular way.
  • Extra stops, a return trip, or a change to the route after the driver has already left.
  • Tolls, parking, permits, and getting in and out of downtown.
  • Traffic, weather, road closures, and what time of day it is.
  • Gas prices moving between the weekly average shown here and the day we actually run it.
  • A wrong address, including a suite or unit number that is missing or incorrect.

Nothing on this page is a quote or an offer. It is an estimate only, worked out from publicly available average rates and public fuel price data, and On Spot Courier & Delivery Services is not bound by it. The only prices that count are the ones we confirm with you ourselves. The address checks and the distances come from outside services, and they are sometimes wrong.
